The
long rest had worked wonders and although it was still pouring we enjoyed
the next few miles. Beyond the lodge the Land rover track gave way to a
stalkers path, we crossed a rickety wire and timber bridge and then faced
the steady climb with views of L. an Lacigh opening before us and
eventually receding as we progressed along the stalkers path. In the
stalking season a Pony would be led into the hills along paths such as
this, and would wait at an arranged point until needed to carry a dead
beast down from the hill. I noticed very faint signs of a vehicle having
travelled this way a few yards from the path. it would be a miracle if
machines can cover ground such as this, I wonder if there is now a
mechanised replacement for the pony.

We surprised a small herd of deer in a little glen as we tried cross a stream racing down to the loch. There was lots of water about now as the heavens had really opened, all the little streams were now in full spate and a lock around at the hills showed waterfalls tumbling down all about us, | |
We were
almost up as high as the cloud base and it seemed a good idea to camp.
before going any higher. It was not easy to find a suitable spot as there
was so much water standing in what looked to be good grassy areas, in the
end we found that the tops of the little Knolls that were everywhere were
quite dry and in fact were good to pitch on. They were clothed in a sparse
heather and grass mixture which was quite springy and comfortable to lie
on.

Tents erected it was good to get into the sleeping bag and relax, it always amazes me how warm and comfortable it is in a Pea Pod, even when the wind blows and the rain pours down outside. Before I dozed off I noticed that 'he rain had stopped, 1 could hear a stag calling on the the hillside to the south, I think deer came quite close during the night, I was aware what I can only describe as a snorting noise, I never botherd to look. out, the sound of the zips would have scared them off anyhow. |
It never really got dark outside, being June and in the northwest the night was very short.
